The setup should last 62 or 63 laps, then I will be out of fuel I think (at 70°F clear).
With cloudy weather or lower temperatures fuel consumptiom will be higher, if you want to run 60 laps you might have to reduce the revs by reducing the diff ratio.
Tires would last easily more than 70 laps (if I had enough fuel)...

What do you think is the best 4th Final Gear Ratio for 70 clear in draft of course. I know you are at a 3.688 but that seems bit short for the draft. I ran 3.611 with the AI for 20 laps and it seemed pretty good but my temps got down to 205 for both water and oil so I'm thinking I might be able to go to a 629 or so. I know I will want the extra gear for laps 40 - 60 but you mostly certainly want to over do it. Has anyone tested long runs in draft?

The temps get a bit high at the beginning of the run, but they drop later when the tires wear...
With those tape / gear settings, I have done about 800 laps under race conditions so far and never blew my engine...

Volker, what is your best qualifying lap for cloudy, 70 temperature? I wondered so that I could have a good benchmark to compare against.

I didn't do any real testing with cloudy weather yet...tomorrow.

Volker

I apologize and will ask the question a different way .

What lap times do you target early in a fuel run to keep the tire wear and temps manageable for a 60+ lap run?

Good fast setup Volker.
Fastest undrafted lap 28.886 and averaging 29.2's to 4's

I'm more used to a looser setup and I think I'm over driving the car, the tyres seem awful hot.
  • LF :220, 214, 210.
  • RF :257, 254, 250.
  • LR :236, 234, 237.
  • RR :259, 257, 255.

still competitive but was getting push.

are these temps normal ?

I usually start with 29.0s w/o draft.
With a nice backdraft, you can run up to 2 tenths faster, if there is a car in front of you giving draft even more.

@Zoo:
I think your driving style puts too much weight on the RF tire or you're running too fast on the first laps...
I usually have an average temperature of 245-250°F in the RF tire, the temperatures you posted are only reached if I want to catch a good draft or if I try to pull away.

Volker, very solid setups you have! I used your Lowes, Marty & now Atlanta setup in my league races and have been really pleased with them. I won my 1st pole of the year with your Marty setup. Your Lowes setup I was able to catch people on long runs, but tonight at Atlanta I seemed to fade after about 10 laps. I tried easing up at the beginning on later runs, but didn't help. I am coming into the corners a little higher than the preferred line. Was just wondering what line you are taking into turns 1 & 3? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge & work. I for one appreciate it.

I uploaded a replay of 5 laps on fresh tires with race pace, maybe it helps you.

Awesome set Volker! Thank you for shareing. This setup is extreamly fast and stabel. I have never run a setup were you actually have to hold back to conserve tires. But still are abel to let it hang out there if you want to pull away. Thank you very much! By the way I hit a 28.068 with the qual set last night in are league practice.

Weather - 10-25-2003, 07:15 PM

Weather was cloudy and 75...and no drafting help. Are league runs the forcasted weather for Sundays race. And I also hit a 28.095 during a testing session offline. I no this sounds crazy but I really think it's capeabel of a high 27
Just have to get my timeing down a littel better. Anyway I really like the race set I made a few adjustments to it. And it seemed to help with tire wear. I dropped both front springs down 50 lbs and clicked the front bias back 2. The only thing now is that it bottoms out easily so I might have to go back to the same settings. I have to keep myself from pushing it to hard right off the bat, but it's hard not to because the set is so fast and fun to drive. Agin thank you very much Volker

Yep with cloudy weather, you can runs sub-28s easily. I'd stiffen the front springs by a click each, reduce diff ratio by two and add 5 lbs of front bias, that should make the setup also work with these conditions.

Important notice:
There have been several people using my Atlanta setups who blew their engine although the temperatures were actually OK. I didn't have any problems myself, but I don't want that to happen again, so I made a little adjustment. Atlanta is the first track where the engine problems occured, that's why I could imagine that they were caused by the high revs you have all the time on this type of track. I read somewhere that in the PWF mods, you will blow your engine much more often if you redline all the time, maybe Papy also added this "feature" with the patch.
However, I've uploaded a modified race setup (VH2 Atlanta Y03 M10 D25.zip => first post) with a longer 4th gear. It is NOT slower than the previous version because you can run with 60% tape instead of 55% now.
The qualifying setup remains unchanged, the engine ought to be able to stand 9000 RPM for a single lap.
