Castor question for Volker - 08-26-2008, 02:53 AM

Volker,

I have downloaded several setups from various racers for tracks you haven't posted setups for. Often these have +1/+2 Castor, and I would like to modify to +6/-2.

Just wondering what other changes you would typically make when adjusting the castor, as presumably this change cannot be made in isolation, as other aspects of handling will be effected.

Particularly interesting in Shorter Tracks, Memphis (0.875 miles) and Pikes Peak (1.0 mile), but would be interested on your view for the 1.5 mile tracks as well if you have the time.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks

Brad

It's been ages since I ran something different from +6/-2, but I think that you can loosen the car up a bit, as this setting makes it more stable. Changing caster doesn't require any other major adjustments though.

I havent ever liked the odd caster settings of negative on right side and high positive numbers on left side. It makes the wheel feel strange......kinda like the force feedback is turned off. I just cant feel anything through the wheel. I typically run positive on both sides with the caster.

Are there wheel settings that you set to make these caster settings more comfortable or do you just have to adjust yourself?

I don't use force feedback, and never did, so I don't know how these caster settings affect it. According to other people who use force feedback however, the steering resistance increases with +6/-2 caster.

It seems as if there is less resistance to me...just cant feel much through the wheel. It also makes it where I have to turn the wheel to the right when going down the straightaway.

The negative caster on the RF is the thing that throws stuff off for me. I can run more caster on the LF and still have a comfortable feel as long as the RF caster is also positive.

I guess to a certain degree caster settings can depend on the feel that you are looking for through the wheel.

I have felt the same thing with the force feedback in my wheel, feels like its not there and the car is seems to be loose. I usually change the caster to LF 2.5 RF 3.5. Recently though, I have been setting it to LF 4.25-4.5 and RF 1.25-1.5. Gives you just enough force in the wheel and settles the car, especially on corner exit.
