Removing 5% of tape is enough, I wouldn't touch the gears.

Well, that's my preferred strategy as well...
I draft with the field and save tires till 15 or 20 laps to go and then I suddenly start pushing it in order to pull away...2 or 3 tenths aren't unusual I think.
